Tapping Noise in Sprinkler System

Question
QUESTION: When my sprinklers go on I hear a "tapping" noise in the water line.  What causes this and can it be fixed?

Thanks.

ANSWER: John,

Sometimes it is water hammer which is the bang your hear when a washing machine is working. If it's a constant tapping sound it is probably your water meter. It also could be a loose pipe in the wall of ceiling.

I think it is the water meter.  Is there a way to fix it?
Thanks.

Answer
John,
Sorry for the delay in answering.
I have the same problem with a few systems we just installed. The water department tells me "that's the kind of meters we're installing now, live with it".
You can try to restricting the water flow a bit by partially closing the valve to the system. Sometimes slowing the water down a little and reducing the pressure to the system help. You may only need to reduce by a few PSI for the system to sound better.
