Sprinkler system wont turn on

Question
After turning our sprinkler system on for the spring, our sprinkler system guy warned us of an upcoming freeze and suggested I turn the water off. So I turned the water supply off in the basement and turned the handle to drain it outside....nothing else. Now I'm trying to turn it back on by turning the same two handles. I heard the water going into the pipe, but I can't get it to go into the sprinkler heads. I can get water to come out of the overflow cap and shoot straight out the side of the pipe....what am I doing wrong? The sprinkler system wants to turn on about as bad as I want it to come on

Answer
Hey Marianne, does the system have a controller that turns on the different zones? Check and see if the controller is turned on. If the water is going into the system, then either the controller is bad, the wiring could be bad, or the valves could be bad. With the information you have given me, this is the best advice I can give you. Good luck and have a great day.
