controller doesnt work

Question
QUESTION: Had electrical storm . Not sure if transformer is problem alone or controller is also bad. Rainbird SST4zone system. I think the transformer is bad but would also like to know if controller is bad. Do I need to buy a new transformer first and then test? It's one of those that have a different plug in that can't be purchased locally
Thx
Dave

ANSWER: Dave do you have a volt/ohm meter? if so we can test the transformer and the controller for proper voltage output.

first - is there voltage at the electrical wall outlet?

next if you plug-in the transformer does the controller show any display? try resetting it (should be a button somewhere on it to reset memory)

check this site if you do not have the manual and need help finding some of the buttons and functions  http://www.rainbird.com/diy/products/timers/sst.htm

if the transformer is not putting out around 24VAC then you will need to replace it.

where are you exactly? I would be happy to direct you to an irrigation wholesale distributor that is sure to have what you need.

QUESTION: I have a multimeter. Tried resetting the controller but nothing. There is power to the plug. It seems the transformer is bad. Any way to test the controller without transformer? resistance, etc?
I am in Anguilla, just north of St Martin in the Caribbean. Might be easier just to buy a new controller but will need to wait til I get back to the states

Answer
you will need power to check the operation of the system but until then try using the meter on the ohm setting to check your solenoids... at the terminal strip/block touch one probe to the "common" or "c" post and the other probe to one of the zone posts "1,2,3,4,etc." you want the solenoids to have somewhere between 25 and 50 ohms. if you had a lighting strike chances are that the solenoids are fried but give this a shot. The only other option for the transformer (and don't tell rainbird this) is to go to a store like radioshack and get a transformer that will have the exact same output range as the one that is not working.

one other option is that I can ship you a transformer from here if you need it quickly as well as any other items. I work at the following company - and I am not in sales nor do I get commission.

Whatever works for you. how is the weather down there by the way? I am currently working with a gentleman on Antigua designing a soccer field irrigation system and the temperature sounds HOT!
