about a year ago i brought home an unwanted plant basket from work.  there was a tiny tree sort of plant.  it has grown, but im wanting to more about it.  It has long green and red leaves,that go to a point.  the trunk, has papery covering like palm trees almost.  ive seen them at lots of other peoples houses, so they are common...

Sounds like a Dracaena marginata.  The leaves are long, thin, green, and go to a point.  They have red margins on both sides.  Very easy to grow.
