Raspberry Plants

Question
mike, i live in riverton wy. i put in some raspberry plants about 5 years ago yhey were givin to me by a neighbor, they have not given any fruit and only a few blossoms.the ground is kind of gravely, but maybe more clay. would good old cow manure be the best or should i till them under & start over? thanks

Answer
Chuck, it definitely sounds like the problem is with the soil. I would absolutely add organic matter to the soil. This could include aged manure, compost, or peat. This will dramatically improve the tilth of the soil and raise the fertility levels. I would then mulch the plants next year with compost to help retain moisture and to further amend the soil. This should correct the nutrient deficiency and balance the ph levels. You should see some improvement next year, but the real harvest will probably occur the following year.

I hope this answered your question. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
