Should I use 10,10,10

Question
I'm a 'newbee' at this gardening but I love it! I rely on 'experts' but sometimes they don't agree! I was told 10 10 10 should be tilled into my new dirt (shrub garden) & someone else told me it's a waste of time & money! HELP!
Another dispute, till in peat moss along with the 10 10 10 & the other says only use peat moss as each plant is put into the ground.
I'm so confused!  Thanks.

Answer
10-10-10 is good to use. Basically this is fertilizer (food for new plants) and used to bring your existing soil up to a certain level of fertility. However, 10-10-10 does notperform miracles. It does not improve your soil or makes the soil wonderful. It is the same as putting a piece of food on a plate. It does not repair the hole in the root, or put a new door in the home, it provides food on the plate and nothing more. Peatmoss sphangnum used as a soil amendment may "repair the leaking root" (amend the soil to make it more useful for plants) but it does not put foot on the pate. 10-10-10 does that.

Generally, adding soil amendments (peatmoss sphagnum or compost) will improve the quantity of the soil (repeat the root) but it will not improve the fertility of the soil. For this you need 10-10-10.
