Compost

Question
what from a veg garden can you NOT add to a compost bin.can you add corn husks?

Answer
Everything from the vegetable garden can be added to a compost pile. The only exception would be a plant that contracted a disease. Since many diseases are spread through the soil, diseases from infected plants can be spread through compost.

Corn husks and other large materials such as small tree limbs and sunflower stalks will eventually decompose, but they will take longer. I have two compost piles, one for the bulkier materials and the other for the fine materials. I also have a shredder that I use for small limbs and whole leaves. The finer you can shred the amendments, the faster they will decompose. It also helps to keep the pile moist and turn it over every two weeks.

Outside of the vegetable garden, great additives include eggshells, kitchen scraps, banana peels, and coffee grinds. Never add meat to the pile, since it can attract rodents.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
