straight neck summer squash

Question
I am trying to grow summer squash. I get many blossoms but when the   squash are about 2 to 4 inches they die.  What to do?

Answer
Dear Porter,
This sounds like some sort of little bore worm that are quite voracious.  Once they have penetrated the squash vine, there is very little that can be done about them, but they can sometimes be prevented.  I have found that placing some diatomaceous earth around the seeds when planting often prevents the invasion to begin with.  Hopefully you live in a region in which it's not to late to get some more planted.
I wish you well.
Kind Regards,
KD Liz
