Squash Plants

Question
I live in New Orleans.  For the first time, I purchased Squash seedlings and placed them in 10 gal. containers, 2 or 3 to a container. They are growing, but their leaves are a lighter shade of green (in some cases, yellow).than anything else in my garden. A (very) few leaves have fallen.  I doubt that they will make it, tho hope sprints eternal.  I would like to know what I did wrong and what if anything I can do now.
Thanks

Answer
The plants are not getting the nutrients they need either due to poor soil or excessive water. When growing in containers, it is very important to water very deeply and then let the soil dry out before the next watering. Otherwise, the roots become saturated and cannot absorb oxygen and nutrients. Excess water also depletes the fertility of the soil.

Be sure to only use a commercial potting soil, not soil from the garden. Mix in some compost and peat as organic amendments. This, along with proper watering, should correct the problem.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
