When do you know the right time to pick your melens

Dear Wayne,
This isn't going to sound very scientific, but it's my method.  Once the color and size look about right, while they are still on the vine, I thump them.  When the sound of the thump changes, I pick them.
Cantaloupe is just about my favorite fruit.  I hope you enjoy yours.
