Fruit in dried and fresh arrangements

Question
I am looking for advise for creating and preserving fresh fruit in both dried and fresh arrangements. I have used cranberries with success, but for the fall holidays and for a rustic look I would like to use Bartlett pears and I would like to do both dried and fresh....bittersweet and assorted natural materials. Any suggestions to keep the fruit from spoiling, especially with the dried arrangements. I understand that using distilled water will help with the fresh...I would be MOST grateful for some tips!

Answer
While drying pears is possible, you would have to limit yourself to using slices to get the best results.  For fresh, whole pears (which I love to use myself) I find that hard Seckle Pears are by and far the best choice to hold up.  Alternative is to use a good faux fruit.  Your local crafts store would have a lot to choose from.
