eucalyptus and fruit trees

Question
Good Morning,
I am looking for further clarification on your 1/18/2008 response in which a reader asked if Eucalyptus tree roots were like poison to fruit tree roots.  I have the opposite situation.  I have an established grape fruit and apple tree between which I had planned on placing a E. citriodora.  My purpose is to create a canopy high above these trees to shade the patio at high noon.  The two fruit trees are well established and produce plenty of fruit.  Will the E. citriodora negatively affect the fruit trees, it will be within in three times the crown diameter of both trees.

Thank you for your advice Mr. Jean!!

Answer
Dear Logan:

Because of the nutrition and irrigation demands of your existing grapefruit and apple tree and plan to add a Eucalyptus tree would likely cause all 3 trees to be malnourished if planted within 25 feet of the other trees. The Eucalyptus tree in its early years of growth also demands heavy irrigation and tends to dry out the surrounding soil.

For the above reasons, I would advise against planting the Eucalyptus since you risk impacting two productive fruit trees.

Mack Jean
