Potted Arborvitae

Question
I have 2 arborvitae plants potted on our deck.  We have had them since May.  They are approximately 5-6 feet tall.  We live in Baltimore, MD where winters are fairly mild but it can get cold and snow.  Just recently the plants have become somewhat brown around the base/trunk areas.  Is this normal in the fall?  And how much water do these potted plants require?  I had been watering daily through the summer but now water every 2-3 days.  I'm not sure if I am over- or underwatering them.
Thanks so much for your help!
Megan

Answer
You Arborvitae are tough. They will survive over or under watering. I would recommend a heavy thorough watering once a week. Everyday is too often. Check the soil before watering to see if it is dry. Also spray the tree with a strong, stiff, water spray in the morning, to get rid of spiders and spider mites, and to keep the top moist. They do not like hot, dry air. If the sun on your deck is very hot, try to shade them during the heat of the day. Keep the snow from collecting on the trees. The weight could break or damage the branches. The old needles on the lower and the inside of the branches, will turn brown, and fall.
It is natural and not a problem.
