Bottle Brush Plant – Identification

Q: I have had this bottle brush plant in my DeKalb county yard for 7 years. I would like to move it to north Georgia but I really don’t want to dig it up now.

Please let me know what I can do.

A: Wow – I’ve never seen a bottle brush plant growing this far north in Georgia!

It looks like a Callistemon citrinus or Callistemon subulatus.

My friends at Wilkerson Mill Gardens in Palmetto have one growing next to their greenhouses but it is in a sheltered location.

They aren’t supposed to be winter-hardy in Atlanta, so I’m really doubtful yours would survive anywhere further north. Try it in a very sheltered spot and see what happens- -and let me know in a few years.
