Plum- Disease Prevention

Q: I planted a plum tree about four years ago. Last year it produced fruit but they had worms. Is there some thing that you can recommend for me to spray? When should I apply it?

A: Even though this is the “Peach State”, peaches and plums are attacked by so many insects and diseases that I don’t recommend them for most gardeners. That said, if you really want to harvest plums you’ll need to spray the trees regularly. The first important fungicide spray is when they bloom in a few weeks, to prevent brown rot. Application of a “Home Orchard” spray every two weeks is then required until a few weeks before harvest.
