prevention of clubroot on brassicas

Question
hi. what powder etc do you recommend to help prevent clubroot i do rotate crops

Answer
Ron, although crop rotation is essential in the control of clubroot, it takes 7 years for the disease to be totally eradicated from the soil.  Quintozene (Terraclor) in 75% wettable powder form is the only product currently available that can cure this disease.  Not many garden centers carry this product, so you would need to search for it on-line.

An effective preventive measure is liming the soil on an annual basis for three consecutive years.  This will not cure the disease if it is already present, but it will prevent the disease from spreading to unaffected areas.

One measure I have always found 100% effective in killing soilborne diseases is solarization.  Cover the entire area with thick black plastic for a minimum of three months.  The heat that is generated from the plastic will kill the disease.  You can then plant again the following spring.

I hope this information proves beneficial.  Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
