rubarb seed planting

Question
Tom , I want to plant 1 pound of rubarb seeds this year. My rows are 105 ft. long , All transplanted plants in 2010. This year I want to try planting rubarb seeds (10 per spot, every foot) and starting new rows the same distance of 105 ft. I live in Ohio and should be able to get them in the ground in april.Full sun light, well drained soil. Can this be done ,or am I in the wrong ball park ? I am new at this , But my goal is to have 1 arce of rubarb in the next two years. I have plenty of room to transplant new rows as needed.

Answer
Hi William,
Thanx for your question.  Here is an article from Ohio State University Extension on growing Rhubarb in Ohio.

Unfortunately, it doesn't talk about growing from seed.

Here is a link for planting rhubarb seed.

I have grown rhubarb from seed several times.  I start them indoors in February under lights and then transplant them in April after the last frost.  You can start your seeds outdoors after the first frost.  If you are going to plant 10 seeds per foot, you will have to thin to the strongest plant after germination.  There should be 3-4 feet in between rows and three feet in between plants.  These plants will get rather large.  Most sources do not recommend harvesting until the third year although some say you can do light harvesting the second year.  I hope this helps.
Tom
