soiltest

Question
Soil test from lawn area

ph 5.95 (Adams-Evans LRI 7.50)
Phosphores 130 (target 72-137)
Potassium 368 (target 146-277)
Magnesium 451 (target 144-295)
Calcium 2328 (target 1401-1790)

instructions: add 30 lbs lime stone/1000 sq feet in spring or fall

I am aware the potassium is high, but normally our sandy loam soil is deficit and since it leaches quickly I am not too worried about this figure. I did add sulfate of potassium about a month before testing so I think I know why this one is high.

What worries me a bit is the calcium and magnesium levels. I understand that too much calcium can lead to magnesium immobility even if it is available in the soil. Our soil tests over the last two years have consistently shown calcium as being high.

How can I lime the soil to bring up the pH value and at the same time avoid adding calcium ?

Is there a way I can bring down the calcium and magnesium levels ?

I understand the concept of the Adams-Evans LRI index, but can you tell me what 7.50 means ? e.g. is that a low, medium or high reading ?

Thanks
KD

Answer
Hi KD
The 7.50 is the PH factor with the soil elements you have
I can only guess that the 5.95 listed is because of the sulphur you added. I would add some organic topsoil to your mix and then test the soil again before adding any lime.
Good Luck  larry  ;-)
