Burnt Lawn

Question
Hi James, not sure if you are the right person, but here goes.  In March I applied a weed and feed (Menard's brand) to my lawn and it did fine.  Weeds disappeared and grass was looking good.  I did a second application last week as weeds were coming back, the instructions said ok to reapplly after 30 days.  I applied it at the same rate, however, the next day we received a really good soaking rain.  I have brown spots all over.  Not sure, but I think the heavy rain washed a good deal of the material into the soil all at once.  Do you have any recommendations as to how I can get these areas to come back ?  Thank you very much for your time and advice.

Robert

Answer
Hi Robert, Weed and feed products should be applied to wet grass so it sticks to the foliage.  Then we prefer to have 72 hours with no rain.  A heavy rain the following day should not have caused any damage from the herbicide or fertilizer at label rates.  It sounds like your grass was dry or possibly overdosed and the grass was burned by the quick release nitrogen in the fertilizer. Keep it well watered and it may green back up but it's conceivable that the grass is dead and you may have to re-seed.  If it wasn't the fertilizer, then it could be fungal and may need to be sprayed.  It would be best to take a sample by your local garden center and get a positive diagnosis.  Jim
