Spikes Dracaena and peace lilies

Question
The spikes plant was a gift.  When I rec'd it the roots were coming out of the bottom of the pot so I repotted it.  Now the bottom leaves are falling off.  What do I need to do.  The peace lily issue is that it was repotted late spring and not again the bottom leaves are turning yellow and brown tips.  I water it once a week.  It is rather large and it hasn't bloomed in a year.  Is my green thumb turning brown as I get older.  Help please.  Do I need to repot in a specific type of soil for each of these problems to get them to bloom and grow healthy.

Answer
Hi Angela, Most tropical plants perform better when they are root bound.  Mostly, because they drink up water quickly and it's not easy to over water them and that's the main reason they go backwards.
Never let them stand in water.  Pour off any in the saucer after 15 minutes or so.  Stick you finger in the soil about knuckle deep to determine if they need water.
Dracaenas don't hold all their foliage, but inconsistent watering causes them to shed lower leaves.  The same happens to peace lilies.
Move them to the brightest spot in your home.  More light will help them dry faster and bloom sooner.  Fertilize with an organic like fish emulsion and water carefully.  They should recover and be fine.  Jim
