sinkholes

Question
i don't know if you are the write expert to ask this question. i two big sinkholes in my yard and neighborhood one of them is dry i am not sure about the other one did the aquifer cause these and what makes them not fill with water and what makes them fill with water

Answer
Hi Ivan, Water moving underground can cause a sinkhole.  It will not normally fill with water except from rain and surface runoff.  Most small home sinkholes are caused from decaying roots and tree trunks, fill dirt settling or broken water pipes.  If it appears to be enlarging, call your local water utility company and have them take a look at it.  Jim
