Iris, Lilies, and Peonies

Question
My question is in two parts.  First, what would keep Iris' and Lilies from blooming with the different colors that they had before I planted them?  Second part, my peonies bloomed beautifully while they were up against my house but I moved them out into the yard and now I can barely get them to break ground let alone do anything else.

Answer
Hi Jim,
Thanx for your questions.  I can't answer the first question.  I've never had a problem with lilies and irises changing colors.  So, I can't help you with that.  But, the peony problem is easy.  Peonies hate to be moved.  Once they are in the ground they can live for 60-100 years or more in the same place.  We have places here in Kansas where the original peonies were planted in the late 1800s and their offshoots are now alive for the past 60 years.  But, dig them up and move them?  The plants will make you pay for 2-6 years.  They will probably not bloom the first two years, sometimes up to three years.  I moved some from my mother's home in 1996 and it wasn't until 2001 or 2002 until they were really nice and bushy and blooming profusely.  After the third year after being moved, your peonies should have made their adjustments and be fine.  I hope this helps.
Tom
