dolomitic lime

Question
I was looking for dolomitic lime for my garden, I was sold hydrated lime, is hydrated lime the same thing? thanks Eugene Riotte

Answer
Hi Eugene, It is not the same thing.  Hydrated lime is used for pickling, whitewash and for controlling odors.  It can be applied to the garden but it is a "hot" lime that changes the pH rapidly so  it must be used with caution.  Dolomitic lime is magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate. Most lawn/garden pelletized lime is usually calcium carbonate.  If you can't find dolomite and are looking for a source of magnesium, use regular calcium carbonate lime and apply Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate).  Epsom salt will lower the pH, so you may have to add additional lime.  Jim
