barn lime vs. ag lime

Question
i recently limed a food plot on our property ,as i grabbed a bag i noticed it said 'BARN LIME' on the back it states limestone, from wisconsin,no additives.I live in central illinois is this going to work the same as agricultural lime?  to neutralize the soil? whats the difference?

Answer
Hi Jon, Without seeing the label, I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect "barn lime" is hydrated lime.  It's used for pickling, whitewash and for odor control.  It changes the pH very rapidly, so I would not use it on existing plants.  You can use it as a pre-plant application a couple of weeks before planting a garden.  Ag lime is slower, but safer.  Jim
