white bulb-like fungus?

Question
I have noticed strange looking shoots orangish in color that are tube shaped with a pointed end sprouting in my grass and soil. Upon digging them out, there is a white "sack", bulb like structure that has some gooey substance inside. They looks like bird eggs in size.  Pretty gross. What is this? Is it harmful? How can I get rid of it?

Answer
HI Jo, It is a mushroom (fungus), but which one is hard to tell.  It is not doing any harm to your lawn, it's actually beneficial.  It's helping to break down organic matter.  The part you see is the reproductive structure, most of the fungus is underground. The mushroom only appears occasionally. During that time, I'd keep an eye on small children or pets who might want to taste them.  Make a pass through the yard early each day and kick them over.
They are very difficult (nearly impossible# to get rid of.  You'd have to treat the area #probably monthly) with a fungicide... forever... and lawn fungicides are expensive.  Jim
