Collecting rainwater

Question
I have a garbage pail under a rainspout for collecting the water for my houseplants.  I transfer the water into plastic gallon containers to store.  They get a bit "green" after sitting awhile and I wondered if that is a good thing or a bad thing.  smile
It seldom rains here in Aridzona and our city water is bad for plants. I know about distilled water but I would love to give them our rainwater if it is helping them.  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Jan,

It sounds as if your water is stagnant and should not be used for your plants.  I should imagine that there must be companies in your state who deal with water collection i.e. supply butts and containers and would therefore be able to advise you about filtering your rain water.  I should contact them for help and advice on how to keep your rainwater fresh and clean.
