Question
What minimal sized patch of soil would I need to provide 3 cats for urinating, so that the microbes in the soil could keep up with the break down of the urine (in California).  I want to allow them to go outside into a dog kennel,  I don't want to maintain a litter box.  I will scoop up & throw out the feces. Hi Elizabeth, I'd be comfortable with a 10' by 10' area.  You'll need to check your pH and lime when the pH falls below 6 and you'll need to feed the microbes.  I'd use horticultural grade molasses and add some humates 3 or 4 times during the growing season.  I'd also put a small sand box in one corner to minimize your clean up.  Just add fresh sand when you've scooped out what was there.  Jim
