fine roots in soil

Question
I have a fine root problem in my soil it prevents moisture from getting to the roots of my plants.I dig it up,but it comes back. How can I get rid of this problem?

Answer
Hi Anthony, I suspect what you are seeing is the mycelium of a fungus.  It can indeed be thick enough to prevent water and roots from penetrating the soil.  I would treat the area with a good soil fungicide.  My preference would be Heritage. This is a granular professional product that your local garden center may have to order for you, but it is easy to apply.  Or call one of your local lawn care companies for a quote.  If you can, till the entire area before treating. You may also have to follow up with additional treatments for a while until you get it under control.  Jim
