Soil drainage problem

Question
I dug a hole to put a shrub in.  I noticed that it was extremely dry and hard compared to the rest of the area where I am putting in some new shrubs for fall.  So, I filled the hole with water to the top expecting that I could come back in 1-2 hours and plant.  To my suprise the hole was still half way full of water.

HELP, what should I do?
Thank you for help...

Answer
Hi Cathy, Dig your hole very wide, about 3 times the width of the root ball, but no deeper than the rootball.  Mix in 1/3 soil amendment of your choice and plant with the top of the rootball at least 2" above your existing soil line.  Bring your soil up to, but not on top of, the rootball.  It should look like it is planted on a little hill.  Gravity will pull water down to your soil line and the roots can still get air.
Since we know this area drains slowly, make sure you select plants that will tolerate those conditions.  Check with your local nurseryman.  Jim
