identification of pest problem in soil

Question
We have noticed that much of our yard (which is sandy soil)looks like it is covered in tiny ant hills but show no signs of ants.  The soil almost looks like little mounds of tiny dirt balls about the size of palmetto bug droppings.  It isn't like a crawfish mound...much smaller.  Do you have any idea what this is.  Thank you in advance for any help you can give us.

Answer
Hi Libby, There are a number of soil tunneling insects, beetle larvae, etc. and I still wouldn't rule out ants.   Use a shovel and turn over the ground near one of the mounds and see what you find.  Is it a single tunnel or a maze of tunnels?  You may even find the insect.  Then write again and I'll try to get an exact identification for you.  Jim
