GM CROPS.

Question
Hi Tom, I hope I have selected the right catagory and that you will be able to advise me.
Perhaps my question is naive, but it is my understanding that GM crops are plants which have been cross pollenated/bred with other plants, or given the genetic properties of other plants. If this is the case, I find it difficult to understand how consuming such plants can be harmful to human beings. In the UK the media refer to GM crops as 'Frankenstein Food' but I am
not convinced. Can you enlighten me please?
Regards, John Weir.  (UK)

Answer
Hi John,
Thanx for your question.  The jury is not all in yet on what effects genetically modified crops may have on the human body.  I for one am not sure I want the Government or big agri-business experimenting with my body only to find out 20 years from now that I have taken on a lethal dose of something and there is no cure for it.  We don't know what effects the modified amino acids and DNA might have on the human body.  The EU has had a number of issues with GM crops grown in the US but now, even the Government here is making manufacturers pull products off of the shelves that were for human consumption and may have GM corn products in them.  That's the way I have understood the controversy.  I hope this helps.
Tom
