Why is it necessary to rotate crops on a farm when in nature the same plants keep coming up year after year in the same locations?

Dear Gene:

Crop rotation has many benefits including: the increased yields of crops, insect control, reduction of soil erosion, and reduction of root diseases. Dr. Michael D. Peel, North Dakota State University, a Small Grains Extension Agronomist has an excellent publication:  "Crop Rotations for Increased Productivity" that discusses the many elements and advantages of farm crop rotation.  You can view this publication on the Internet at the website listed below:
