browning of apple sapling leaves

Question
Hi Tom,
I have a couple of apple saplings I've started from organic apples
and they have been doing really well inside. However, I've moved
them outside as the nights are warmer (5 to 6 degrees C) and
days are 14 degrees or more. I can't imagine getting any frost.
They are very small (6 or 8 leaves each, and about 9 cm tall).
The leaves have recently started to brown. Could it be too much
sun or too little nutrients? They are in their own clay pots.
Should I keep them inside until they get bigger?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
Thanx for your question.  If the seedlings had been indoors even if in windows or under lights, they need time to adjust to the strength and elements of the sun, wind, temps, etc.  You should always place seedlings started indoors in a place outside that does not get direct sunlight or direct exposure to wind, rain, etc.  Do this for about 10 days and then the seedlings will have adapted themselves to the climate.  Direct exposre can cause the leaves to burn and shrivel up or turn brown.  Make sure your seedlings get watered and every 10 days or so, apply a balanced fertilizer at half strength until the seedlings have gained some size and strength.  Don't take the seedlings back indoors.  Place them in a protected spot as I instructed above.  I hope this helps.
Tom
