Avacado Trees (Seedlings)

Question
I planted an avacado seed for fun and it started to grow, I didnt "tooth-pick" it or any of those other methods you hear of, however I'd like it to continue to grow its about 2 inches tall there are a few little green spigs just starting. How much of what do I need and should I leave it out side this winter or bring it in? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Angie,
Thanx for your question.  Avacado trees are not hardy where it freezes.  Now that the tree has a root and sprouts, plant it gently (so you don't break the root or the sprouts) in a rich, moist (not soggy) potting soil so that the sprout is barely out of the soil.  Keep the soil evenly moist, warm and in a very sunny spot otherwise the avacado will get leggy and grow spindly.  Medium warmth is fine not too warm you want it to grow slowly now that the sun is in a lower position for most of the U.S. and Canada.  If you're south of the equator, you are in Spring and approaching summer and it is the perfect time to grow the seedling.  The tree will grow quickly the first couple of years and then start to slow down.  You can nip off the tip of the growth after it gets 3 or 4 feet tall to encourage branching out.  It needs lots of sun so the minute you have decent weather (no frost) put it outdoors in its pot where it will get sunlight for all or most of the day.  I hope this helps.
Tom
