planting elijah blue fescue seeds

Question
Can I plant elijah blue fescue seeds right on the ground in the spring, or do I need to get them going in the house first? And how do I go about doing which ever method that needs to be used? Thanks

Answer
Hi Deborah,
Thanx for your question.  Elijah blue fescue does not come reliably true from seed.  The best way to propigate it is by breaking up the clumps.  Trim the clumps periodically which causes them to spread out with more growth.  If you still want to grow the seed, press the seed gently into good, moist, not soggy, potting soil in separate pots.  Keep at 70-75 degrees.  Sprouting occurs in 2weeks or less.  Periodically trim the grass back as it reaches three or four inches until it's time to put the seedlings out.  Because Elijah blue is a hybrid its seeds probably will not result in plants that look like the parent.  If you separate the clumps into smaller pieces the plants will maintain their integrity.  I hope this helps.
Tom
