Growing a Lemon Tree

Question
My lemon tree is 16" tall, 2 1/2 yrs old. Healthy. I pulled off some of the leaves off bottom. It gains new leaves every month, Keep it at a west window. I started fertilizing it in the fall, with watered down miracle grow.
Now what?

Answer
Hi Rene,
I don't recommend fertilizing the tree during the fall and winter.  Start fertilizing the spring and continue through midsummer.  The plant needs to be allowed to go somewhat dormant during the winter and it will be much more robust with this rest period.  Fertilizing keeps the plant stimulated and doesn't allow for the rest period.  Now, this spring, when temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees at night, place the plant outdoors in the shade, protected from rain, hail and wind for about 10 days and then place the plant in direct sunlight where it will get sunlight for 8 hours a day.  Allow the plant to stay outdoors during the warm season and make sure you don't let the pot dry out.  You'll have to water every day during the hot summer.  This treatment will do wonders for the appearance and health of your plant.  Keeping them indoors makes them needy and frail.  Mine bloom so profusely the smell is intoxicating.  But, I forgot this year and left it outdoors after the first frost.  It's still green so I'm going to bring it in and see if it survived.  We've had such a mild winter it appears still to be alive.  Anyway, I digress.  I hope this helps.
