norway spruce

Question
I was given 10 seeds to grow a norway spruce in memory of my late daughter and, although I follow the instructions none grew. I kept the soil moist and it turned green, so I reduced a bit the humidity, but nothing grew. I had them in parcial shade, covered with some mulch that came with them.
I would like to get some more and try again. Do you know of a good source to get some good seeds? and I would need precise intructions also as how to grow them.
I live near Los Angeles, CA.

THank you, so much,

norma

Answer
Hi Norma,
Thanx for your question.  Here is a link for Norway spruce seeds.  http://www.treehelp.com/shopping/product-detail.asp?Product_ID=2328

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a healthy Norway spruce sapling?  I am sure there are many nurseries in the Los Angeles area that sell them.

Also, when growing most conifers from seed, they will need one or more cold periods to break the dormancy of the seeds.  That means, they need about 90 days of temperatures not more than 40 degrees F in order to break the dormancy.  Sometimes they need a period of cold, warm, cold and then warm again in order to break dormancy.  You can simulate this by planting the seeds in a pot and seal the pot in a plastic baggie.  Place inside the fridge for 90 days and then put it out in a warm room.  If nothing happens within 60 days, put it back in the fridge for another 90 days.  Germination of seedlings will be erratic and over a period of time that could last up to a year.  So, you might want to count your seeds to determine how many to expect.  I hope this helps.
Tom
