wind damage to Norway spruce

Question
Dear Mr Hern,
I have a wind break of norway spruce.  After the high winds yesterday I noticed 2 of them are leaning.  They are leaning enought that some of the roots have been pulled loose from the ground.  I suspect that these trees were damaged  during the winter and these winds finished the job.  These trees are 10 to 12 feet high.  We plan on pulling the trees back and staking them Is there any thing else we can do to help save them?  We live in zone 4.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
pulling back and staking is the best way to get them going again. mulch w/2-4" of root mulch under them to help keep the roots covered. fertilize w/2-3 cupfulls of hollytone by espoma fertilizer available at your local garden center/nursery. water them after staking and again weekly during hot dry spells where no appreciable rain has fallen. don't make the mistake of watering too frequently.
good luck
rick
