growing sweetcorn in Tenerife,

Question

Answer
Hello John, Linda and Ashley,
Sweet corn or maiz can be grown in most countries that get a frost-free period.  Corn does require rich soil and lots of moisture so you may want to amend your soil with cow, goat, sheep or horse manure, preferable aged manure and not fresh as this can harbor diseases such as E. coli.  Corn is pollinated by the wind so I would suggest planting at least 100 plants, 25 to a row.  The plants should be about 6 inches apart.  I know some people will say this is close but I use intensive growing methods and this has worked for me with good results.  Make sure there is no other corn growing very nearby as inferior types of corn can adversely affect the flavor of sweet and super sweet types of corn.  If it doesn't regularly rain you will need to water the plants and ensure they get 1 inch (2.5 cm) per week.  You should get 4 or 5 ears per plant.  The information on the link I'm including is from Kansas State University but the information is applicable to your area.  I hope this helps.
Tom
