how do I keep my own seeds?

Question
I have a great crop of bush beans this year - both yellow and green... what do I do to save some of them for seeds for next year?  I've never done this before.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi  Beth,
Thanx for your question.  If your beans are hybrids the seeds you save will probably not result in plants that are similar to the parent plants due to the instability of hybridization.  If your beans are heirlooms, you can save the seeds as long as there are no other types of similar beans which could cross-pollinate and result in different plants.  Beans are generally self-fertile meaning they pollinate themselves but bees and other insects can cause some pollination.  Just let some of the bean plants produce pods and don't pick them until they are brown and drying up.  When you harvest the beans, allow they to dry out indoors for a couple of weeks and then store them in a glass jar, sealed and kept in a cool, dark place until spring.  I hope this helps.
Tom
