Mango seedling

Question
I am trying to grow mangos from my mango pits from my yard.
They seem to germinate fine and get about a foot tall.  The leaves are really big -about 6-8" long and seem so healthy.  Then the bottom leaves turned brown, so I cut them off. (I thought maybe it was a fungus). A couple of weeks passed and  the last 3 leaves are browning.  Can you advise what I am doing wrong?  Too much water?  Need more room for taproot?  I still have some plants that are ok. I live in central Florida.

Answer
Hi Nancy,
thanx for your question.  I believe mangos do have a long tap root so you may need a larger and deeper pot.  Also, make sure that the pot drains well and the soil isn't soggy.  While the mango doesn't like to dry out, it doesn't want to sit in mud either.  There are a couple of varieties of mango that have some colder tolerances.  Did you check those out for possibly growing in Central Florida?  I used to live in NW Florida and grew a banana in my backyard.  In the winter it would die back to the ground but would always come back in the spring, same thing for my ginger.  I hope this helps.
Tom
