Direction of Avocado Seed in Water

Question
Hi Tom,

Oddest thing, I did as directed in the various entries. I toothpicked and suspended my avocado seeds in water (pointed end down as directed)
Well, weeks went by...I changed water every other day or so...nothing happened.
Then finally one began to sprout a root. It sprouted on the opposing end (above water/flatter end)
Do Avocado species differ as to which end should be in water?

Answer
Hi Christopher Joe,
Thanx for your question.  Actually, I think the embryo of the seed is closer to the top of the seed than it is to the middle and so, sometimes, the root will arch up towars the top especially if the seed has not split so the root can travel down.  I don't know that the species differ in which end should be in water.  I have seen the root poke up through the flat end of the seed before so I think that is not uncommon.  Usually though, they seem to go straight down.  I hope this helps.
Tom
