mimosa pudica

Question
QUESTION: How do you grow a mimosa pudica from seed?

ANSWER: Hi Clara,
Thanx for your question.  Barely nick the seed and soak it overnight in warm water.  Place the seed 1/2 inch deep in a pot and keep the soil moist but not soggy.  Keep the pot in a warm room 75-80 F.  The seedling should emerge in about 10 days or maybe less.  When the seedlings have their first set of true leaves (the first set of leaves are seed leaves...), gently prick out the plants and put in separate pots.  Water enough to keep from drying out.  Feed with a 12-12-12 fertilizer according to the directions on the package.  M. pudica will not survive frost conditions so it must be brought indoors ahead of frost periods.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: sorry what does it mean to nick the seed?and how do I nick it? what with? Also do you know how to grow the dinosaur plant? like does it need soil or do I just leave it in a bowl of water if so how deep. Thanks

Answer
Hi Clara,
Thanx for your question.  To nick seed simply take a very sharp knife and scrape the edge of the seed.  That should be enough to let moisture in and speed up the germination.  Just barely nick the edge of the seed with the knife.

The dinosaur plant I believe you are talking about Salaginella lepidophylla also known as Resurrection plant and Rose of Jericho.  You can grow it in loose soil for best results.  You can also place the plant in a bowl and add water to the bowl.  Either way, as long as you keep the environment moist, the plant will grow.  If you allow it to dry out, it will shrivel up and curl up into a ball but it will come back once water is restored.  Use a bowl that is deep enough to hold at least a cup of water.  I hope this helps.
