Blueberry Propagation

Question
I live just outside charlotte, nc. We have several blueberry bushes planted in a row.  Some are sending out shoots anywhere from 1 to 2 feet from the plant. Can I cut these off whith a spade and replant to get another bush? Also, is this time of year (Jan.) ok to do that?

Answer
Jean, you can definitely propagate blueberries by transplanting new shoots. Just be sure to pick the most tender of the shoots. The more woody, the less chance for success.

I would not attempt to propagate until early spring, after your last frost date. The freezing and thawing of the soil is not conducive to transplanting. The good news is that in your area of the country, that time is not very far away.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
