seed Identification

Question
QUESTION:    What kind of seed that is shaped like a butterbeen but is about four Inches long and  about one half Inches thick? I found it laying in my apartments parking lott. The shell was shaped like a butterbeen also. I don't know if it is a fruits seed or a veggy seed.    Hope you can help me!

ANSWER: Hi Lyndell,
Thanx for your question.  When you say the seed is about 4 inches long I'm thinking you really mean the seed pod like a bean pod right?  What is your general location?  It sounds like the seed from some kind of tree growing nearby or do you have wisteria growing nearby?  Wisteria is a member of the legume (pea family) and has seeds in a pod like beans.  Also, locusts have seed pods like beans but some of those pods are very long and wide.  Let me know what kind of trees are in your vicinity and your general location.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: I live in Lafayette La. this seed was in a hard type shell but the inside of it was exactly like a butterbean except it was huge! Like I said it was about four inches long and about a half Inche thick!! It was very strange. It looked like a seed you would get out of a fruit like a peach seed looks.

Answer
Hi Lyndell,
I'm sorry it has taken so long to get back to your but I know of no vegetable seed that is 4" long and 1/2" thick other than the nut of some coconuts.  I can't think of any kind of plant growing in the Lafayette area with a seed that big.  Can you provide a picture of it?
thx,
Tom
