Removing a Tree

Question
Hi Mike,

We have a tree right by our door that is around 14-16 feet high.  I wish I could tell you what kind of tree this is, but I just moved in recently and still a newbie in home maintenance.

My worry is that the roots of the tree are branching out towards our walkway.  I plan to have a gardener remove this.  I've been given two options, one will involve cutting the tree out and the other will involve using chemicals.  What are the pros and cons of each method?  My biggest concern now is just to make sure that none of our property gets damaged during the removal process (i.e. water pipes, fence, cement walkway).  If price is not really an issue, which would you recommend?  Also, my wife is pregnant and I'm concerned the fumes from the chemicals might not be good for her.

And in follow up to the previous question, can you recommend a good replacement tree?  I'd prefer something that I wouldn't have to worry about the roots as much and one that won't grow too high.

Thanks for your help and keep up the good work!

Answer
Mark, either way, the tree needs to be removed. The normal process is to cut it down at the base, drill holes in the stump, and then place a special chemical designed strictly for tree stumps in the holes. This will accelerate the rotting process. The roots will also die and eventually decay, causing no damage to the walkway or underground materials.

Your best bet is to have a tree specialist do the work if you're not comfortable with it. They specialize on removing the tree safely.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
