QUESTION: Hi Tom
I live in the Chicago area, the three year old tree is located in the middle of the garden on the westside of house. I just reasonly pruned the tree because it didn,t have bud formations.

Answer
Hi Linda,
If you had a late freeze, this could have taken care of any bud growth.  Many hydrangeas are sensitive to this and while they will grow and be leafy in cooler climates like Chicago, they often will not bloom or bloom sporadically.  Additionally, if the freeze didn't get the blooms your pruning did.  This shrub should not be pruned except directly after the blooming period.  The later you prune the more likely you are are to remove blooming buds.  Here is a link to hydrangea experts you may find helpful.
thx,
Tom
