Growing sunflowers

Question
A friend grew a giant sunflower and I took several seeds from that plant the other day. We live in ca., in the san fernado valley which is very hot. Is it too late to plant these seeds? If so can I keep them for next year? Thank You

Answer
Hi Noel,
Thanx for your question.  It's a bit late for sunflowers this year.  Save the seed for next spring.  It takes 90-120 days for these giants.  The level of sunlight and temperatures will not be sufficient, even in SoCal for these plants to be at their best in late December or January.  I hope this helps.
Tom
