Growing an aspen tree indoors?

Question
I have this really great idea to pot some small aspen trees (purchased from Home Depot) and use them as "house plants" in our living room. My husband says they cannot survive inside. Additionally, he says they will lose their leaves (even though it will never get cold in our house). Could you please tell me who is right?? I'd love to have a unique addition to our living room decor!

Answer
Unless your living room has windows surrounding the entire room and are completely open to light, the trees will not get enough light to survive. Aspens need a minimum of 8-10 hour of direct sunlight per day. They also require moisture (humidity) and a dormant season, which are difficult to replicate indoors.

The decision to try this experiment is certainly yours. However, the tree will never do as well indoors as it will in its natural environment.

Good luck, and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Mike
