Crape Mertlyes

Question
Hi, I have 2 Crape Mertlyes by my veggy garden. I got sick over the summer and had to let me garden go for awhile. All the beds are full of about 2 foot Crape Mrtlyes. I dug some up and planted in pots for the winter. Is this going to work? Should I cut them shorter? Would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Lisa from Louisiana

Answer
Hi Lisa,
Thanx for your question.  So, I take it you either took suckers or the crape myrtle reseeded itself, you dug up the seedlings/suckers and repotted them?  Yes, I think they should be fine for the most part in Louisiana.  If you're farther up north near Shreveport, Monroe or the Arkansas state line, you should shelter the pots from the cold north wind.  I would place them against a southern facing wall just for added protection and then the next season they should be fine on their own without any protection.  I hope this helps.
Tom
